Digging Deeper: CBD and Terpenes

Digging Deeper: CBD and Terpenes

If you’ve heard the term “terpene” used in relation to hemp or CBD, you may have wondered what the heck it means. And while the word sounds highly scientific, terpenes are actually pretty easy to understand.

So what are they, exactly? Terpenes are naturally occurring aromatic compounds found in vegetables, herbs, fruits, conifer trees and, of course, hemp. In addition to imbuing plants with scents and flavors, terpenes help ward off pests, attract pollinators and resist disease. But they’re not only beneficial to plants—they can provide therapeutic benefits for people as well—and one of the ways to receive these benefits is through hemp and CBD.

Here at Verist, we craft all of our products with full-spectrum CBD—meaning our CBD contains all naturally occurring cannabinoids and terpenes in the hemp plant we extract it from. Therefore, thoughtfully selecting and cultivating hemp strains packed with beneficial terpenes is an essential part of our process, as it ensures you get as many benefits as possible out of our CBD oils, body butters, gummies, salve and lip balm.

Today, let’s take a closer look at three of these strains—and their terpenes—to get a better understanding of the benefits they can provide.

T2: ALERT, CLEAR-HEADED, CALM

T2 is a sativa hemp strain known for stimulating the mind while helping to relieve discomfort and anxiety. Smelling of wood and fruit, while tasting like a harmonious blend of sweet grapes and citrus, the terpenes in T2 help bring the calm of the outdoors to wherever you may be. The types of terpenes found in T2 include:

Myrcene: Present in lemongrass, hops, thyme, parsley and mango, the scent of myrcene can bring to mind balsam, clove and musk. With sedative, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, myrcene is useful for promoting restfulness and helping to relieve pain.

Caryophyllene: Found in black pepper, cinnamon and hops, it’s no surprise that the aroma of this terpene is a bit spicy. Possessing antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, caryophyllene is known to help reduce pain, ease anxiety, help with sleep and even reduce cholesterol levels.

Humulene: A natural pesticide for the plants that contain it, this terpene is found in hops, sage, basil, black pepper, coriander and the balsam fir tree. With an herbaceous, spicy, earthy scent, it’s best known for its anti-inflammatory effects.

Limonene: It’s no surprise that this terpene is found in the rind of lemons, but it’s also present in oranges, grapefruits, limes and other citrus fruits, giving them their classic astringent scent. With anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties, an elevated mood and relief from stress can be two of the effects of limonene.

SUVER HAZE: RELAXED, UPLIFTED, PEACEFUL

Another sativa hemp strain, Suver Haze features terpenes that can help boost your mood and spark your mind, all while leaving you feeling relaxed. In addition, it’s also been reported to help provide relief from headaches and pain and to help encourage restful sleep. Think of it as your on-call ally for times when things feel overwhelming.

The sophisticated blend of terpenes found in Suver Haze boast a spicy, woody, floral and sophisticated fragrance. As such, you can expect a complex palate of earthy herbal and citrus scents and flavors that combine to create a satisfying experience for your senses. In addition to the caryophyllene and myrcene terpenes found in the T2 CBD strain, Suver Haze also contains:

Pinene: Though it might be the most abundant terpene on Earth, pinene is far from ordinary in its properties, which include a wide range of anti-inflammatory benefits and the ability to help boost respiratory health.

LIFTER: RELIEVED, REPLENISHED, RELAXED

The Lifter CBD strain is a hybrid of Suver Haze and another strain called Early Resin Berry, which is known to be gentle and calming for the mind. Lifter is one of the most popular hemp flower strains in the industry, and with good reason: It can help elevate your mood with a focused, yet calm, energy while also helping to relieve body tension.

The terpenes in Lifter combine to provide both a calming and enlivening feeling, making it an ideal choice when you need a push to get through those final items on your to-do list. With a woody and sweet, yet funky, scent, the flavor of Lifter evokes tropical fruit and blueberries with a hint of pine and grass. Lifter contains the limonene and humulene terpenes found in the T2 CBD strain, as well as:

Linalool: Found in birch bark, as well as in several herbs, including jasmine and rosewood, linalool carries the scent of lavender with a light, sweet and spicy citrus flavor. Often used to promote relaxation and ease anxiety, linalool can also help to relieve pain and soothe sore muscles.

FULL-SPECTRUM MEANS MORE BENEFICIAL TERPENES

At Verist, we use full-spectrum CBD in all of our products, retaining all naturally occurring cannabinoids and terpenes. This increases your chances of experiencing the “entourage effect,” which occurs when all of the compounds in CBD work together to produce greater therapeutic benefits than any one could on its own.

Verist’s full-spectrum CBD oils, salve, gummies, lip balm and body butters can help provide a wide range of benefits, including sleep & relaxation, pain & recovery and stress relief & clarity. As always, keep in mind that everyone experiences CBD a little differently. Find the right combination for your needs by trying our products and discovering what works for you.
