Ever wonder what spring cleaning looks like when your “home” is 40 acres of Minnesota farmland? As a family-owned cannabis farm in Minnesota, spring is more than just a fresh start. It’s a full-on reboot for our crops, our soil, our equipment and our spirits. So we thought we’d give you a peek behind the scenes of what happens before your gummies ever make it into your mouth 😄
STEP ONE: THE LAYERS COME OFF—LITERALLY
When we stop wearing sweaters and start wearing t-shirts, it’s time to start farm prep for the season. But before we think about planting, we’ve got equipment to clean, tools to prep and winter grime to get rid of.
STEP TWO: CLEAN SOIL, CLEAN SLATE
Each field tells its own story. Some still hold the remnants of last fall’s harvest—hemp stalks, pumpkin vines, roots, etc. Depending on the state of the soil and what we’re planting next, we’ll either leave the remnants for soil health, turn it under or clear it out completely. We then till to expose weed roots or spray natural herbicide for larger-scale control. One of the best things about having a 40-acre farm is the variety of different conditions it provides, allowing us to choose the location that’ll help our plants grow up to be the best they can be.
STEP THREE: FIX, PATCH, REPEAT
Minnesota winters are no joke. They leave behind busted fences, bent irrigation pipes and machinery that needs a little (or a lot of) TLC. We take time to carefully repair irrigation systems, fences, structures and equipment. These require regular upkeep throughout the summer, too!
STEP FOUR: TIME TO PLANT
By late spring, we’re planting cannabis alongside other farm favorites like corn and pumpkins. It’s the most hopeful part of the year—when months of planning, prep and patience finally meet the moment the seeds go into the ground. After that, the work doesn’t stop, but we get to watch our dedication turn into a thriving farm.
STEP FIVE: KEEP IT ORGANIC
At Verist, we’re dedicated to truly organic practices. Our sun-grown cannabis is fed only organic meal and compost teas. Beneficial insects and organic herbicides are used to protect the plants, and complementary fungi aids in root growth. And, thanks to a flowing aquifer on our property, we’re able to nourish our crops with natural spring water that goes straight back into the soil.
Farm work is hard work, but it’s the kind that fills us up—the kind that reminds us that joy takes root when you tend to it. From seed to gummy, we intentionally tend to our farm. The result? Cannabis that is pure and deeply rooted in the land it came from.
