CBD and Dogs: Steph and Kaya’s Story

CBD and Dogs: Steph and Kaya’s Story

Summer adventures are the best, but the pesky bugs that come with them? Not so much. Bites from insects like flies and mosquitoes are an unfortunate seasonal reality for humans—and they can really bug our pets, too. That’s why we’re glad Verist user Steph reached out with a story about how our Magic Touch CBD salve helped her dog Kaya heal faster after a bad encounter with ticks.

As ski patrollers and avalanche dog trainers in the mountains of Montana, Steph and Kaya are no strangers to extreme outdoor conditions, often enduring sunburn, windburn, sore muscles and more. Steph had begun using Magic Touch salve as her go-to natural healing solution, but had never considered using it on Kaya—until her poor pup turned up covered in wood ticks after a day spent playing on a friend’s land.

As soon as she noticed the ticks, Steph immediately began to remove them—only to see that Kaya’s sensitive belly was full of red marks that looked itchy and painful. Remembering how soothing her Magic Touch was for her own skin irritation, Steph decided to try it on Kaya.

After a few applications of the salve—which contains 250 mg of CBD—Steph saw the red marks begin to disappear to the point where she almost couldn’t see them anymore. “Kaya was happier and more comfortable, and she didn’t even try to lick her belly, which was a big win,” Steph noted. “I’ll definitely be using it on her again since it worked so well and so quickly.”

The fact that the salve was so effective makes sense, as CBD helps treat pain and inflammation in people by working with the endocannabinoid system, and dogs have those too. In fact, dogs have a higher amount of cannabinoid receptors than humans do, which means CBD may have even more potential to be effective for them.

So is it safe for you to try CBD products with your dog? The short answer is yes, provided you consult with your vet first. There are a few other things to keep in mind too:

  • Full-spectrum CBD is safe for pets. While Verist products aren’t made specifically for pets, they contain full-spectrum CBD with less than 0.3% THC. In higher doses, THC is toxic for dogs, but with only trace amounts, full-spectrum CBD products are typically okay for them to have.
  • Topicals are a good way to get started. If you’re not sure how your pet will do with CBD, starting out with a topical product like Magic Touch salve can be a good way to ease in.
  • Adjust the dosage according to your pet’s size and weight. And again, always consult with your veterinarian first.
